fishbone house lamu

Exotic getaway in the heart of shela

an old swahili house, reflecting the rich history of the island

Built with coral stone and shaped by Swahili tradition, Fishbone House blends Arabic and Western influences with natural elements. Tucked away in a peaceful corner of Shela, moments away from the beach, it is a place to slow down, settle in, and live at the gentle pace of the island.

Designed to host up to eight guests, the house is entirely private. It’s a secluded retreat for families or friends who wish to share space, yet move through their days unhurried and undisturbed.

A place apart

Lamu is a place where time loosens its grip. Where donkeys replace cars, doors are carved by hand and the ocean quietly sets the rhythm of the day. Life unfolds at walking pace, shaped by tides and soft light.

Rooted in Swahili culture and centuries of history, the island invites you to slow down, to look closer and to live a little lighter. Nothing here asks for haste. Everything asks for presence. This is what a Holiday in Kenya feels like.

Just 150 metres from the beach, the ocean is always near. A short walk through sandy lanes and whitewashed walls brings you to the shoreline.

Here, you are close to everything, yet gently removed. Close enough to hear the call to prayer drift across the rooftops, to sense the tide changing, to feel the pulse of island life. Yet, it is far enough to retreat into stillness when you return home.

what guests are saying

“Perhaps one of the best places we've ever stayed in Lamu. The villa is very spacious, very clean and very fine interior decor and aesthetics. The interior and exterior design definitely gives 100% lamu vibes. The rooms are very clean, spacious and comfortable. Our host, Eddy was very responsive and very friendly, so were the staff especially Rachel who made us breakfast every morning.
Less than 2 minutes walking to the sea front, in a very safe and quiet neighbourhood.
Would 100% recommended!

“Fishbone was a wonderful place to stay, with such lovely staff who were incredibly friendly and helpful, as well as very flexible. The house was close enough to walk everywhere and have access to the sea. We really enjoyed our stay.”

—— Shara

“All rooms are spacious and have their own bathroom, and although the sea breeze does not reach the house, it was perfectly comfortable with the multiple fans in each room.

Eddy responded super quickly in the run-up to our trip. Rachel and James, who look after the accommodation, were very warm and took good care of us. They kept the house spotless, made delicious breakfasts for us, and helped us arrange boats and excursions. Chef Irene was excellent, and we enjoyed trying her Swahili specialties in the beautiful courtyard dining area.”
